I think this is the best Disney adaptation ever.

‘Okay, we’ll forget that he killed a couple of his teachers and his brother. That he went mad and killed his entire family. That he had to do the twelve labours as penance. That his jealous wife killed him with the blood of a centaur who tried to rape her, even though she didn’t mean to.’

‘So…. what are we going to include then?’

‘Well, that he’s strong. And… um… that he’s the son of Zeus.’

‘Good enough.’

I may or may not have spent a day walking around just going DISNEY LIED TO YOU because of this movie xD

(I love it. But. HADES ISN’T A BAD GUY FFS. ALSO ZEUS IS KIND OF A DICK)

I’m always just like ‘GUYS HEY GUYS HE’S GONNA GO MAD AND KILL MEG AND ALL THEIR CHILDREN. THAT’S RIGHT, MEG DIES.’ To be fair, Zeus is kind of a dick in a lot of mythologies… you know, eating a woman he slept with is a bit of a dick-ish thing to do. As is coming down in a shower of golden rain to get some unsuspecting woman preggers. He’s just a bit of a douche.

 Is it bad the main thing that bothers me is Hades as bad guy? Like, I love Greek mythology, love it to bits, but I can sort of handwave a lot of what this film throws at us, partly because I was 7 when it came out and partly because it is actually a decent movie that does at least give us some fun cameos from other myths (hey, I like God of War, I can handle this stuff).

But there is this thing of Underworld=Hell so Hades=Devil which is just so wrong I can’t even. (Percy Jackson books got massive points for not only getting this right, but actually playing on the fact that everybody assumes he’s the bad guy, probably because the author is some sort of mythology scholar/lecturer/person.) I feel sorry for the poor guy. Especially because even in the film it’s all ‘My motivation is I hate being lord of the dead when you’re lord of ALL THE THINGS’ and I have to say, when you read it and it’s all ‘so the three brothers divided everything up and Hades got the realm of the dead’, I do feel for the guy.

Also, remember this is the same studio that put singing gargoyles in Notre Dame de Paris.
